Mrs. Stanley's Syllabus

Welcome to sixth grade language! This will be an exciting year full of transitions and new learning experiences. The language curriculum this year will be challenging but hopefully enjoyable for students. I look forward to a positive year for myself and your child.

Tentative Course Outline: This course is designed to meet all 6th grade objectives for the English and Technology portions of the Alabama Course of Study and Common Core.

Each nine week period will consist of a novel study, supplemented with ACT prep practice, multi genre reading, videos, and audio. In addition to the novel studies we will have daily language practice, vocabulary study, and writing assignments. We have an Interactive Notebook that we work on weekly. It remains in the room as a resource.

It is very important to be organized. Students are expected to keep both their binder and their interactive notebook up to date. They need to keep all worksheets, writings, and handouts in their binder. We will have several notebook checks during each nine week grading period. I will let everyone know in advance of the dates of notebook checks.

First 9 weeks: The Watson Go To Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis
Second 9 weeks: Hatchet by Gary Paulsen
Third 9 Weeks: Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse
Fourth 9 weeks: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Ronald Dahl
The fourth novel could change based on choices made by the teacher. Students will know well ahead of time.
