With the completion of a new high school for Hokes Bluff in the summer of 1985, grades four through eight were moved to the former high school building (which was built in 1941) and Hokes Bluff Middle School was established. At that time, Hokes Bluff Elementary did not have classroom space for grade four. In 1990, the fourth grade was relocated to the elementary school and HBMS became a more typical middle school with grades five through eight. With the completion of a new building in July 2009, HBMS became a true middle school with grades six through eight. The fifth grade is now part of Hokes Bluff Elementary. From the beginning of HBMS, the faculty and staff have utilized the resources available to instruct the students of our community.

Due to the growth of our community, a new school building was built for students in grades six through eight. Students, faculty, and staff opened the 2009-2010 school year in the $5.6 million building which contains 16 classrooms, 3 science rooms, 3 special education classrooms, 2 computer labs, library with small computer lab, office space, and cafetorium. In May 2010, the cafetorium was named in honor of Representative Craig Ford who was instrumental in obtaining funds for the construction of the cafetorium.

During the summer of 2014, construction for a new two million dollar gymnasium for competition and physical education began. The new gymnasium also included a band room and locker room facilities. The gymnasium was completed in the spring of 2015.

Hokes Bluff Middle School serves students in grades six through eight who live in the Hokes Bluff School District. This includes the area from the western city limits of Hokes Bluff eastward to the county line and from the Coosa River to the boundary of the Glencoe School District. According to the 2010 census, the population of the City of Hokes Bluff was 4286. This does not include those areas not within the city limits. 99% of the students of HBMS are white with 1% or less being of other ethnic background. HBMS is a Title I school.
